Sturbridge uses a Town Meeting form of government — meaning residents vote directly on the town budget and bylaws, either at the Annual Town Meeting each spring or at Special Town Meetings called as needed. Between Town Meetings, elected and appointed boards handle the day-to-day decisions that keep the town running.
The Town Minute summarizes those meetings so you always know what's happening — without sitting through hours of proceedings.
Town Meeting
Residents vote directly on budgets and bylaws — annually in the spring, or at Special Town Meetings as needed.
Elected Boards
Select Board, Town Moderator — chosen by voters to govern between Town Meetings.
Appointed Boards & Committees
Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Finance Committee, and others — appointed to handle specific areas of town business.
What they do: Chief executive authority for the town. Five elected members oversee town operations, licenses, personnel, and policy. They are supported day-to-day by the Town Administrator.
📅 Meets: 1st and 3rd Monday at 6:30 PM — Veterans Hall, 308 Main Street
What they do: Reviews all budgets, spending requests, and warrant articles before they go to Town Meeting. Importantly, they are appointed by the Town Moderator — not the Select Board — so they serve as an independent check on the budget process.
📅 Meets: As needed — most active September through May
What they do: Seven members who guide how Sturbridge grows. They approve subdivisions, site plans, and special permits. They also maintain the Zoning Bylaw and the town's long-range Master Plan.
📅 Meets: 2nd and 4th Monday — Center Office Building, 301 Main Street
What they do: Hears appeals of zoning decisions and grants variances or special permits when a property or project doesn't fit neatly within the standard zoning rules. Think of them as the appeals court for land use.
📅 Meets: Roughly monthly
The Annual Town Meeting is held each spring. Registered voters come together to vote on the town budget, approve bylaws, and decide other warrant articles. You must be a registered voter in Sturbridge to participate — and your vote counts the same as anyone else's.
When urgent issues arise between annual meetings, the Select Board may call a Special Town Meeting. These are less common but follow the same format — and any registered voter may attend and vote.
