Sturbridge is a Town Meeting government — meaning residents vote directly on the town budget, bylaws, and major decisions at Annual and Special Town Meetings. Elected and appointed boards handle day-to-day decisions in between.

Think of it in three layers:

  • Town Meeting — residents vote on budgets and bylaws (happens once or twice a year)

  • Elected Boards — Select Board, Town Moderator

  • Appointed Boards & Committees — Planning Board, Zoning Board, Finance Committee, and more

📋 The Boards We Cover

Select Board

What they do: The chief executive authority in Sturbridge. Five elected members who oversee town operations, approve licenses, manage personnel, and set policy direction. Supported day-to-day by the Town Administrator.

Who elects them: Residents, at large — 3-year terms

When they meet: 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 6:30 PM Where: Veterans Hall, Town Hall — 308 Main Street

Finance Committee

What they do: Reviews every department budget, transfer request, and warrant article that goes before Town Meeting. Their job is to give residents an objective recommendation on how tax dollars are spent. Appointed by the Town Moderator — not the Select Board — so they serve as an independent check.

When they meet: As needed, especially in the months leading up to Town Meeting (typically fall and spring)

Planning Board

What they do: Seven-member board that guides how Sturbridge grows. They approve subdivisions, site plans, and special permits for development projects. They also maintain the Zoning Bylaw, Subdivision Regulations, and the town's Master Plan.

Who appoints them: Town Administrator, confirmed by Select Board — 5-year terms

When they meet: 2nd and 4th Monday of each month Where: Center Office Building, 301 Main Street

Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA)

What they do: Hears appeals when a property owner believes the Building Inspector made an error, or when someone needs a variance or special permit that doesn't fit standard zoning rules. If your neighbor wants to build something unusual, this is likely where it gets decided.

When they meet: Roughly monthly (typically third Wednesday); schedule varies — check Sturbridge.gov

🗳️ Town Meeting

Annual Town Meeting is typically held in the spring. This is when residents vote on the year's budget, zoning changes, and major spending items. You must be a registered voter in Sturbridge to participate.

Special Town Meetings are called as needed when something can't wait until the annual meeting.

The Finance Committee publishes a detailed report before each Town Meeting explaining what's on the warrant — The Town Minute summarizes it in plain English.
